Paediatric dentistry

Your child's first smile is a magical moment and their first tooth, a milestone in their life. At Dental Perfection we want to help you and your child look after those precious teeth right through to adulthood.

Good oral hygiene is determined in childhood so it's vital that children's dental experiences are positive. That's why our practice is designed to appeal to children of all ages with a fun, welcoming atmosphere and lots of colour rather than the intimidating setting typically associated with dentists' visits.

Of course many of our patients are too young to fully appreciate the importance of good oral hygiene and that's why we work closely with parents so they can make informed, responsible choices on behalf of their children. We will take time to explain all about your child's risk of oral disease, preventative strategies and the modern, innovative treatments we offer.

A first visit to our practice focuses on the child getting to know us. It will include an initial examination, information about risk factors for dental disease, eating habits and general oral healthcare. From there we develop an individual treatment plan best suited to the child and family.

We provide services for children with healthy teeth as well as those who have problems. The general trend towards aesthetics and preventive care is important as the best looking teeth are those that are absolutely clean and healthy.

Our philosophy is about making each visit to the dentist child orientated, helping children to avoid the fears associated with dentistry

We also work in close association with Medicross, Constantia theatre as well as Dr Leon Withlock who performs sedation for us in the chair. Both are options that we consider as to make it as comfortable for children as possible, giving them the best treatment possible.

Fillings

Fillings differ in terms of the composition of the material used to make them. It can vary from tooth coloured filling to fillings consisting of fluoride or even silver filling made out of an alloy of metals. These materials restore the morphology and function of missing tooth structure. The loss can be due to trauma (fractures) or caries (cavities). At dental perfection we prefer tooth coloured fillings (composite).

We also recommend the removal of old amalgam fillings and rarely use them as a restorative filling.

Crowns

When teeth are severely damaged and structural strength and integrity becomes a problem a crown is a great option. It is a prosthesis made out of special materials (e.g. porcelain, ceramic) and 'caps' or encircles the whole tooth to give it strength and protection. It can be cemented onto a natural tooth or an implant.

Veneers

These are very thin "shells" made out of ceramic, porcelain or composite and are used to cover only the outer surface of the tooth. They are used where teeth are severely discoloured, slightly skew, where there are gaps between teeth or where the overall appearance is anaesthetic. The veneers are cemented on the front surface (especially anterior teeth), to give a better overall aesthetic look.

Inlays/Onlays

When a dental filling becomes too big, weakening the structural integrity of the tooth, but is not yet big enough to consider a crown , an inlay/onlay is a good option. The old filling is removed and the cavity prepared. Next an impression is taken of the cavity, and the inlay/onlay is made to the exact size to fit precisely into the cavity.

Implants, bridges and dentures

Implants

Implants are a new and perfect solution for replacing missing teeth. It's a screw, usually made out of titanium that is placed in the jaw to support replacement teeth (crowns) or bridges.

The advantage is that implants don't rely on neighbouring teeth for support, thus preserving adjacent teeth (different form a bridge). With advanced technology the waiting period is less for healing, and excellent results can be achieved in less than 6 weeks.

Missing teeth

Perfection like beauty lies in the eye of the beholder and at dental perfection our aim is to do our utmost for you as patient to come as close as perfect to you expectations.

Bridges

A bridge makes use of the teeth adjacent to a gap and is also known as a fixed partial denture. A dental restoration is made and joined permanently (cemented) to these adjacent teeth, thus 'over bridging' the gap. It is a very aesthetic option, and restores function instantly.

Dentures

A denture, also known as false teeth are constructed to replace a full set of teeth or a few missing teeth. The prostheses make use of support given by the surrounding hard and soft tissue in the mouth and are made out of an acrylic base and 'false teeth'.

Root canal treatment

When a cavity becomes too deep, effecting the nerve of a tooth a root canal procedure is usually performed. As the pulp chamber of a tooth is a very sterile area (contains the nerves and blood vessels), the nerve dies off quickly if it is infiltrated by bacteria (caries) or severely traumatised (hard knock on the tooth). The damage is usually irreversible and thus the dead nerve tissue has to be removed as it can cause severe infection (abscess etc). These canals are cleaned and filled with a special material. Normally a crown is placed on such a tooth as it protect the rest of the tooth, if there isn't enough tooth structure left

The procedure can be done in the office (60 min) or it can be done at home

(takes up to 3 weeks).

At dental Perfection we make use of the Opalescence whitening system by Ultradent, and for more information the site can be visited at www.opalescence.com.

Cosmetic dentistry - Teeth whitening

Teeth have the tendency to discolour, as they consist out of different layers and tubes that can absorb discolouring particles. The discolouration takes place in the inner layers of the tooth, making it impossible to whiten them with normal cleaning aids (brushing). Whitening is thus a chemical reaction where the oxygen in the peroxide, moves through these tubes and breaks the carbon bonds that is responsible for the discolouration. The teeth can now return to a more  natural white colour.

The procedure can be done in the office (60 min) or it can be done at home (takes up to 3 weeks).

Botox

Botox  is a purified protein, which acts as a nerve blocker and  blocks the impulses from specific  nerves which make certain muscles contract. Without the nerve impulse the muscle doesn't contract and unwanted lines e.g. forehead lines, frown lines, crow's feet (lines at the sides of the eyes) doesn't form. Thus it gives a relaxed look, and decreases wrinkle formation.

This protein is reversible, and will last up to 4 months, in which time another treatment will be needed. After about your 4th/5th treatment the muscle should be in a very relaxed condition and less treatment will be needed.

There are almost no side effects, but a slight headache can occur in some patients.

Fillers

Dermal fillers are used wherever there is volume loss or very deep wrinkles occur.  It enhances volume, fills up deep creases on the face, can augment lips and redefine them etc. Overall it can help to restore the youthful contours of the face.

It consists of hyaluronic acids, which is a naturally occurring human protein responsible for hydration and cushioning of the skin.

The typical areas and treatments are:

  • Nasolabial folds (lines from the end of the nose to the end of the lips),
  • Perioral area (wrinkles around the lips),
  • Marionette lines (lines from the mouth corner to the jaw line, accentuating the downturn of the mouth)
  • Lip augmentation, providing definition to thin, wrinkled lips without looking overdone
  • Filling in scars(acne, trauma),
  • "tear-trough deformities" (hollow under-eye circles), hollow cheeks, cheek-lift, brow-lift and
  • Jowls and sagging, by redefining the jaw line
